Puerto Rican Genealogy Workshop

The Hispanic Genealogical Society of New York has hosted numerous Puerto Rican Genealogy Workshops, co-sponsored by La Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña.

The workshops include a lecture and discussions which covered a wide range of subjects helpful to the beginner Family Historian. Topics covered include:

  • How to get started in genealogical research
  • What forms to use for documentation
  • How to organize your research
  • What are the sources for genealogy research and where to find them
  • Where to go for resources in New York
  • How to conduct research in Puerto Rico
  • How to use on-line services and the internet in your research

After a lively question and answer period, the society begins an interactive SHARE session where attendees and speakers shared their surnames and Puerto Rican towns of interest. A delicious lunch is usually prepared by Don Otilio and his staff.

Hands-on workshop where the participants could search the 1910 and 1920 census’ is usually available. The society offers Social Security Death Index searches both from CD-ROM and on-line sources; gave demos on popular genealogy software programs, printing out ancestor and descendant family trees; and broke down into group discussions about genealogical experiences and requests.

A handsome Puerto Rican Genealogy Workshop Kit was prepared for all those who attend along with a certificate of participation in the conference. There were moving experiences as some of the presenters and those who attended the workshop shared their experiences and success stories in finding lost relatives.
